Floor Plans
Part of: Locations — This guide covers the floor plan feature in detail. For general location management, see the Locations guide.
This guide explains how to use floor plans in Tagnet Enterprise & Cloud. Floor plans let you upload PDF maps of your facilities and visually map locations to zones on the plan, giving your team a spatial view of where inventory lives.
Overview
Floor plans connect your location hierarchy to a visual layout. You can:
- Upload a PDF floor plan for any location (warehouse, building, campus)
- Draw zones on the floor plan and link them to child locations, with custom fill, border, and label styling
- Click a zone while viewing a plan to see what's stored there and jump straight to its location page
- Place fixed readers where they physically sit, and click one to see what happens when it reads a tag
- View inventory locations highlighted on the plan from anywhere in the system
- Support multi-page PDFs for facilities with multiple floors or areas
| Use Case | Example |
|---|---|
| Warehouse | Upload a warehouse layout, draw zones for each aisle or storage area |
| Manufacturing | Map production cells and staging areas to a factory floor plan |
| Campus | Upload a site map, link zones to individual buildings |
| Office | Map IT asset locations to rooms on an office layout |
Permissions
Floor plan access is controlled by two permissions, assigned through roles:
| Permission | What It Allows |
|---|---|
| View Floor Plans | View floor plans, zone overlays, and placed readers, including the workflows a reader runs. Open the floor plan viewer from the Locations list, a location's Floor plan tab, or any location chip. |
| Manage Floor Plans | Upload, replace, and delete floor plans. Create, edit, and delete zones. Place, move, and remove readers. |
If you don't see floor plan options in the interface, ask your administrator to check your role permissions.
Uploading a Floor Plan
Each location can have one active floor plan at a time. When you upload a new floor plan, the previous one is automatically deactivated.
Preparing Your PDF
- File type: PDF only
- File size: 5 MB maximum
- Multi-page: Supported; each page becomes a separate viewable page in the editor
- Tip: Use clean, high-contrast layouts for best results. Scanned documents work, but vector PDFs look sharper when zooming in.
Upload Steps
- Navigate to Locations and open the location you want to add a floor plan to.
- On its page, click the Floor plan tab.
- If the location has no floor plan of its own and isn't covered by an ancestor's plan, click Upload floor plan directly. If it's covered by an ancestor's plan instead, click Upload a plan for this location first to switch into the upload flow.
- In the upload dialog, drag and drop a PDF file onto the drop zone, or click to browse for the file.
- The system detects the number of pages automatically and displays a summary.
- Click Upload to save.
The floor plan is automatically named after the location and stored in the database (no files on disk). After the first upload, you land in the zone editor with a Done editing button so you can draw zones right away.
Replacing a Floor Plan
To replace an existing floor plan, open the location's Floor plan tab, click Edit floor plan, then open the Actions menu and choose Upload new. The current floor plan is deactivated and the new one becomes active. Previously uploaded floor plans are kept in the system in case they need to be restored.
Deleting a Floor Plan
Open the Floor plan tab, click Edit floor plan, then open the Actions menu and choose Delete. This permanently removes the floor plan and all of its zones and placed readers (the readers themselves are not affected). You will be asked to confirm before deletion.
Creating and Editing Zones
Zones are the colored regions you draw on top of the floor plan. Each zone links to a child location in your hierarchy, creating a visual map of your facility.
Navigation and Drawing Tools
The editor toolbar separates navigation from drawing. Select and Pan are navigation modes in a toggle, only one is active at a time:
| Tool | How to Use |
|---|---|
| Select | Click a zone to select it. Drag to move it. Drag a corner to resize. |
| Pan | Click and drag to pan around the floor plan. Scroll to zoom in and out. |
Draw rectangle and Draw polygon, visible only with Manage Floor Plans permission, are separate one-shot action buttons rather than navigation modes:
| Action | How to Use |
|---|---|
| Draw rectangle | Arms rectangle drawing. Click and drag on the plan to draw the zone. |
| Draw polygon | Arms polygon drawing. Click to place each corner, then double-click to finish the shape. |
| Place reader | Arms reader placement. Click where the reader sits, then pick it. See Placing Readers. |
Clicking either button arms it for a single shape; the editor automatically switches back to Select once you finish the zone dialog (or cancel out of it). Pressing Esc cancels a shape you're in the middle of drawing without leaving the tool armed. Clicking an already-armed draw button again cancels it and returns to Select.
The Fit to View button (screen icon) resets the zoom to show the entire floor plan.
Creating a Zone
- Click Draw rectangle or Draw polygon.
- Draw the zone on the floor plan: click and drag for a rectangle, or click each corner and double-click to finish for a polygon.
- A dialog appears asking you to configure the zone, organized into sections:
- Location: The child location this zone represents (required). Only descendants of the floor plan's location are offered by default; turn on Show locations outside this tree if the zone needs to point at a location elsewhere in the hierarchy, useful for a plan shared across more than one branch, like a building used by two different sites.
- Appearance: A fill color with opacity for the zone overlay, plus an optional custom border color with its own opacity. Leave the border on its default and it's derived automatically from the fill color.
- Label: The text drawn at the zone's center, seeded with the selected location's name and freely editable. Turn off Show label on plan to hide it, or choose a text size (Small, Medium, or Large). The text color auto-contrasts against the fill unless you turn on Custom text color.
- Preview: A live preview showing exactly how the zone will render on the plan as you adjust the options above.
- Click Add Zone to add it to the page.
- Repeat for additional zones.
- When you're done, click Save in the toolbar to persist your changes to the database.
Note: Closing the zone dialog (Cancel, the backdrop, or the X) with unsaved changes asks you to confirm before discarding them.
Important: Zone and reader changes are not saved to the database until you click Save in the toolbar, which saves the page's zones and readers together. Tagnet protects unsaved work: if you try to leave with unsaved zones or readers, whether by clicking Done editing, switching to another tab, navigating away, switching to a different page of a multi-page plan, or closing the browser tab, you're prompted to Save, Discard them, or Keep editing.
Editing a Zone
- Click the Edit button (pencil icon) next to a zone in the right-side panel, or double-click a zone on the floor plan.
- Update the location, appearance, or label options and click Save. The same unsaved-changes confirmation applies if you close the dialog without saving.
- Remember to click Save in the toolbar to persist the change.
Deleting a Zone
- Click the Delete button (trash icon) next to a zone in the right-side panel.
- Confirm the deletion.
- Click Save in the toolbar to persist the change.
Rearranging and Resizing Zones
Use the Select tool to:
- Move a zone: Click inside the zone and drag it to a new position.
- Resize a zone: Click a zone, then drag any of its corner handles.
Multi-Page Floor Plans
If your PDF has multiple pages, a page selector appears in the toolbar. Each page has its own set of zones and readers. Switching pages reloads them wholesale, so if the current page has unsaved changes, you get the same Save / Discard / Keep editing prompt before the switch happens.
Placing Readers
Put your fixed RFID readers on the plan where they physically sit, for example the dock door portal or the yard entry gate. A reader on the plan shows the whole path from a tag read to what happens next: click it in the viewer to see the workflows that run when it reads a tag (see Clicking a Reader).
A marker only shows where the reader is. The location Tagnet uses for the reader's reads is still its read point location, set on the reader's own page (or inherited from its device group). Moving the marker never changes it.
Which Readers Can Be Placed?
Only fixed readers can be placed. Handheld and vehicle-mounted devices move around, so a pin would mislead. A fixed reader appears in the picker when its read point location (its own, or its group's when it has none) is on the floor plan: the plan's location, a location drawn as a zone on the plan, or any location inside either. Zoned locations count even when they sit outside the plan's own branch of the hierarchy, so a plan shared across branches can hold readers from each. The usual setup is:
- Upload the PDF to a top-level location, such as the site or building.
- Draw zones for its child locations.
- Set each reader's location to that top-level location or one of its children.
A reader with no read point location doesn't appear in the picker. Set its location on the reader's page first. Each reader can be placed once per page.
Placing a Reader
- In the editor, click Place reader (visible only with Manage Floor Plans permission).
- Click the plan where the reader sits.
- Pick the reader from the list. Each entry shows its read point location, and "from group" when that location is inherited from the reader's group.
- Click Save in the toolbar.
Like the draw buttons, Place reader is one-shot: the editor switches back to Select once you pick a reader or cancel. Clicking the armed button again cancels it.
Moving and Removing Readers
- Move a reader: With the Select tool, drag its marker. Markers sit above zones, so a click on a marker always selects the reader, not the zone underneath.
- Remove a reader: Select its marker and press Delete, or click the Delete button (trash icon) next to it in the Readers list in the right-side panel.
- Click Save in the toolbar to persist the change.
Readers placed on a plan are removed with it when the floor plan is deleted, and when the reader itself is deleted. Uploading a new plan starts without readers, the same as zones.
When a Reader's Read Point Moves Away
A placed reader stays on the plan if its read point location later changes to somewhere that isn't on the plan (by the same rule as the picker above). That can happen when the reader's location changes, when its group's location changes, when it moves to another group, or when a location is moved elsewhere in the hierarchy. Tagnet never removes the marker for you, because the reader may still physically sit there with its location set wrong. Instead it flags the reader:
- The marker gets a dashed amber ring.
- In the editor, its row in the Readers list says Read point is no longer on this floor plan.
- In the viewer, its popup explains that the reader's reads land elsewhere.
Fix it either way: set the reader's location back to a location on this plan, or remove the reader from the plan and click Save. A read point that moves between locations on the plan isn't flagged.
Viewing Floor Plans
Floor plans are accessible from multiple places in the system, so you can quickly see where a location is on the map, and clicking any zone shows a quick summary of what's stored there.
From the Locations List
Rows in the Locations tree show a Map icon whenever there's a plan to view:
| Icon Color | Meaning | Tooltip |
|---|---|---|
| Info (blue) | The location owns an active floor plan | View floor plan |
| Secondary (gray) | The location is drawn as a zone on another location's plan | View on floor plan |
Clicking either opens the floor plan viewer dialog, on the plan the location is actually shown on, wherever in the hierarchy that plan lives, with the location's own zone highlighted when it's the Secondary case. This icon requires View Floor Plans permission and only appears for locations that own a plan or are directly drawn as a zone; a location that merely falls under an ancestor's plan without being zoned itself doesn't get a row icon here, though its own Floor plan tab still shows the ancestor's plan.
From a Location Chip
Throughout the system, in inventory lists, item details, and other location fields, you will see a Map icon next to location names that are drawn as a zone on an active floor plan. Clicking this icon opens the floor plan viewer on the plan that zone is drawn on.
When opened from a child location that is mapped as a zone:
- The viewer automatically navigates to the correct page.
- The zone for that location is highlighted with a pulsing gold glow.
- Other zones are dimmed so the target zone stands out.
- The view automatically zooms to focus on the highlighted zone.
From a Location's Floor Plan Tab
Open a location's page and click its Floor plan tab. If the location has a plan to view, own or otherwise, the tab opens straight into the same interactive viewer used by the dialog: pan and zoom, with clickable zones.
- Users with Manage Floor Plans permission see an Edit floor plan button in the viewer's toolbar. Click it to switch into the zone editor described above; click Done editing to return to the viewer.
- If the location doesn't have a floor plan of its own but is covered by another location's plan, whether an ancestor's or a shared plan drawn from elsewhere in the hierarchy, the tab shows that plan read-only through the viewer, with this location's own zone highlighted when it's drawn on the plan, along with a link to open the owning location and, if you have Manage Floor Plans permission, a button to upload a plan for this location instead.
- Locations with no floor plan anywhere in their hierarchy see the upload prompt described in Uploading a Floor Plan.
Clicking a Zone for Details
Anywhere you're viewing a floor plan, the dialog or a location's Floor plan tab (not the zone editor), clicking a zone opens a small popup at the spot you clicked, showing:
- The zone's location name, and its code (or type, if it has no code)
- On-hand inventory quantity: in inventory for locations that hold items directly, or in subtree for locations that only organize other locations
- Total inventory value, shown only when the items there have unit costs set
- Transactions over the last 7 days, with a small trendline
These are the same quantity and movement figures you'd find on the location's own Overview. Click Go to location in the popup to jump straight to that location's detail page.
Tip: The viewer is always in pan mode, click and drag to pan around, scroll to zoom, and a plain click on a zone (without dragging) opens its details popup.
Clicking a Reader
Placed readers appear as round sensor markers with their name underneath, drawn above the zones. A grayed-out marker is an inactive reader, and a dashed amber ring means its read point has moved off this plan (see When a Reader's Read Point Moves Away). Clicking a marker opens a popup that answers one question: when a tag is read here, what happens?
- The reader's name, with its device type (or reader model) underneath
- Its read point location, with "from group" when it's inherited from the reader's device group, or "No read point location" when neither is set
- When a tag is read here: the workflows that run for this reader, numbered in the order they run. Each shows its conditions summary (the same line as the Workflows list), then its steps in order, worded the same way as on the workflow's own page. A step that only runs when an earlier one succeeds, fails, or has nothing to do says so. Steps turned off, and steps whose own device conditions exclude this reader, are left out.
If no workflow runs for the reader, the popup says so: the reader's reads are still recorded, but nothing moves or is sent. That's the cue to set up a workflow for it. An inactive reader shows a warning, because its reads are discarded until it is activated.
Anyone with View Floor Plans permission can open the popup. Workflow names link to the workflow for users with View Workflows permission, and Go to reader opens the reader's page for users with View Devices permission.
Viewer Controls
| Control | Action |

How Parent/Child Relationships Work
Floor plans generally follow your location hierarchy, but zones aren't strictly limited to it. Understanding both halves helps you get the most out of the feature.
How It Works
- A floor plan is uploaded to a parent location (e.g., "Warehouse A").
- Zones on that floor plan are linked to child locations (e.g., "Aisle 1", "Aisle 2", "Receiving"), normally descendants of the plan's own location, but a zone can point at any location in the hierarchy if Show locations outside this tree is turned on when creating it (useful for a shared plan spanning more than one branch).
- When someone views a location anywhere in the system, Tagnet first checks whether it owns a plan, then whether it's directly drawn as a zone on any active plan (preferring the nearest one if it's zoned on more than one), then falls back to walking up the location tree for the nearest ancestor with an active plan.
Example
Campus (no floor plan)
└── Building 1 (has floor plan uploaded)
├── Room 101 (mapped as zone on Building 1's floor plan)
├── Room 102 (mapped as zone)
└── Storage (mapped as zone)
└── Shelf A (not directly mapped)
In this example:
- Clicking the Map icon on Room 101 opens Building 1's floor plan with Room 101's zone highlighted.
- Shelf A isn't drawn as a zone, so no Map icon appears for it. Opening its Floor plan tab still shows Building 1's plan: Tagnet walks up from Shelf A to Storage to Building 1 to find the nearest plan.
- Campus has no floor plan anywhere above it, so its Floor plan tab shows the upload prompt.
Which Locations Get the Map Icon?
Each surface has its own rule:
- Location chips (inventory lists, item details, and similar location fields) show the icon only when the location is drawn as a zone on an active floor plan.
- Locations list rows show it when the location owns an active plan (blue) or is drawn as a zone (gray).
- The Floor plan tab on a location's page needs no icon: it always shows whatever plan applies, whether the location's own, one it's zoned on, or the nearest ancestor's plan as a fallback.
Wherever you open a floor plan from, Tagnet resolves the plan that actually shows that location, including a shared plan outside the location's own ancestor chain, and highlights its zone when it has one.
